SME student chapter recognized
Mines’ Society for Mining, Metallurgy and Exploration (SME) student chapter was recently recognized nationally as the Minerals Education Coalition (MEC) student chapter of the year at the annual SME National conference on Feb. 23-Mar. 1 in Minneapolis.
MEC works to “identify, produce and disseminate fact-based K-12 minerals education lessons and activities and to inform and educate the general public about the importance of mining in their everyday lives.”
THE MEC SME Student Chapter Award recognizes the outstanding efforts of a SME student chapter for accomplishments in community outreach and education on mineral and mining topics that serve the MEC mission.
“MEC is part of every SME chapter, and our club was chosen for our above and beyond efforts, including two Mining in Society Boy Scout merit badge workshops that we hold in the spring and the fall,” said Marie Hetherington, president of Mines’ SME chapter.
SME is a professional society whose more than 15,000 membership represents all professionals serving the minerals industry in more than 100 countries. SME members include engineers, geologists, metallurgists, educators, students and researchers. SME advances the worldwide mining and underground construction community through information exchange and professional development.
