At Midyear Degree Convocation on December 16, Colorado School of Mines conferred 174 bachelor’s, 162 master’s and 31 doctoral degrees during ceremonies held in the Lockridge Arena. Central to the program was guest speaker Richard O’Brien, president and CEO of Newmont Mining, who spoke on leadership and integrity.

A gorgeous day in Golden greeted racers for Stage 6 of the USA Pro Cycling Challenge, which took riders up and down Lookout Mountain, through the center of Golden three times and into Denver for the finish. Students Design Award-Winning Sound Wall

Mines engineering students designed an award-winning sound-wall that has reduced traffic noise from Sixth Avenue as their Senior Design project. Their project began in 2008, and after construction was completed last spring, the project won the 2010 City of Lakewood Community Sustainability Award for its use of 3,330 recycled tires.

Moon Rock Lands at Mines

A rare moon rock, long thought to be missing, was recently put on display at the Mines Geology Museum. Its value estimated at more than $5 million, the specimen was one of 360 rocks to come back to Earth in 1974 aboard Apollo 17, the sixth and final lunar landing mission of the Apollo program. Gov. Bill Ritter spoke recently at the ceremonial unveiling of the new exhibit.

The Orediggers took home a newly minted award – the Nyikos Cup – after defeating RMAC rival Mesa State College 46-10 on October 16. A painting by the noted 19th century artist Albert Bierstadt that has been hanging on campus for decades is now on display in the Denver Art Museum’s (DAM) Creating the West in Art exhibition, which runs through next spring. The undated painting, Yosemite, had gone uncataloged by scholars in the art world until Mines officials



Nuclear Engineering Gearing Up

At the beginning of its fourth year, Mines’ graduate Nuclear Engineering Program has a total of 25 students enrolled in the MS and PhD programs, and another 15 in the five-year BS/MS program.
